Old Dominion Speedway 6-7-2008

Today would start with hot and humid conditions. Track temperatures would reach a scorching 164 degrees by 3 PM.

Dave would practice and qualify his backup car. He was pleased with the car and looked forward to running a competitive race.

Drivers would take the green flag, and on lap 5 the entire grandstand would be struck with terror as they witnessed Dave’s car flip eight or more times.

Dave would spot an opening at the bottom of turn one and took advantage of it. He got up even with a competitors car and would be squeezed down into the gravel. He went as low as he could go and, unfortunately, the competitors left rear tire made contact with Dave’s right rear tire, and the ride was on. This brings a whole new meaning to "rubbing is racing". Legends cars are virtually open wheeled race cars; the fenders on the car are basically for show. There is no protection against tire rub and, unfortunately, when tires rub, someone pays the price. This was a very unfortunate incident, which could have been a lot worse! If I’ve learned anything this year, it is that our cars are built with safety in mind.

Dave did suffer a bruised lung and ribs, and a sprained arm and neck. He has been instructed to lay low for a few weeks while his injuries heal. So far he has been a pretty good patient, but he is very anxious to get back into a car!

The stigma that portrays race car drivers as rednecks is totally misconstrued. They are good olde boys with BIG hearts! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Dave has received many calls from race car drivers, some even offering their cars for him to finish out the season. While their gestures are heartfelt, he simply cannot get back into a car until his lung heals.
