Old Dominion Speedway
Whelen NASCAR Late Model Division
May 21, 2011

Today was a perfect day for racing.
The skies were clear, there was a slight breeze and the temperatures were in the low 80's.

Dave realized during practice that there was something seriously wrong with the car. He complained of the car plowing and wanting to take off towards the wall. He and his father and crew worked feverishly on the car with the help of Herman Gant and the crew of Robert Bruce. They discovered that the car had a bent truck arm. The clock was ticking, with minutes to spare; they got the car on the ground and were ready for time trails. Dave qualified in the 6th position with a 15.876. The worry of the rear in the car shifting at anytime loomed in the back of his mind.

Dad, this car is plowing badly.
Holy cow!!! Are you kidding me?
We have a bent truck arm, what else could possibly go wrong?

The scheduled Late Model event for tonight's lineup would offer twin 50's. While this event offers excitement for the fans, most drivers dread it. Our goal was to finish the race and be competitive. Dave held his line for many laps until he felt the rear shift. At that point, all he could do was hold on. He rounded out the first twin 50's with a top ten finish.

The crew once again went to work on the rear in preparation for round two of tonight's event. This race would be action packed and in some instances resembled a demolition derby! Dave drove with determination, made some great moves and finished in the 7th position.

This team never gave up! Although we had car difficulties, we finished both events in one piece and were competitive. We knew this year would be difficult, but we had no idea we would have to overcome so many obstacles so early in the season.

We've all learned that we must overcome adversity in order to succeed!
