Dave would qualify 3rd and drive the race of his life. He hit his marks on the track with precision, and maneuvered traffic well. Later on in the race, there would be a wreck between the #13 and #12 cars, which resulted in oil on the track. When racing resumed, the #89 and #3 cars would spin in turn one because of oil while Dave was entering the turn. Dave, seeing that the wreck started low on the track, went high. In a split second, the two cars would start drifting up the track, which resulted in Dave cutting his wheels to go low.
Old Dominion Speedway did a remarkable job of assisting the drivers and insuring their safety. Dave, leaving the track did give the crowd a wave and received a large hand and cheers for his efforts.
Race car drivers are driven by their need for speed. They truly are athletic in every sense of the word. While they may be able to maintain their own vehicles, they have no control over track conditions and other drivers.
