Old Dominion Speedway
Late Model Racing 4-23-2011

Today's race was filled with adrenaline, and lots of emotion.

Although the day started off gloomy, the clouds would lift and Mother Nature graced us with sunshine and warm temps.

Dave would practice the car twice before qualifying. He qualified on the pole his first start in the Late Model Division with a 15.51. for tonight's 100 lap event.

The line-up consisted of 19 Late Models who started tonight's field. The off season had everyone eager to race, but unfortunately, over zealous driving would cause havoc in turns one and two on the first lap. Regrettably Dave was gathered up in the wreck. Not the best way to start the season!

Dave would bring his #34 Daniels Auto Care, Ashcraft Racing machine down pit road thinking his night was over. His father was in the stands spotting, and I was the only remaining pit member standing. Before I could blink an eye, Dave Moon, and drivers from the Mini Modified and Legends division, along with Dave's track friends, swarmed the car and went to work. In a matter of minutes they had the car taped, bunge corded, and ready to race. Dave would resume racing on the track until he was called back to the pits because his window net was down. He drove his heart out and finished the race in the 8th position.

Dave's main objective was to race well and finish. He wanted to gain the respect of his competitors, and prove that he could race at their level. We feel he did both. He also focused on trying to bring the car home as clean as possible because of lack of sponsorship. He took the pole, came back after the wreck and finished 8th. His lap times were consistent; he held his line and MANY of the drivers who he competed with congratulated him after the race. They all gave their version of what happened on the track and assured him he was a victim of circumstance.
